The Natural Hair Shrinkage Struggle
This is a post of pure frustration, which I’m sure a lot of ladies can connect with. We all go through it!
As I scrunched up my face in the mirror and stared menacingly at the tight curls on my head, I briefly wondered if my neighbors would call the police (for a noise violation, of course, not for fear of my life) if I let out the scream of frustration that was slowly building up in my spirit. It helps relieves stress, so I’ve heard.
If you couldn’t tell – today was a Deep Condition Day, as I think of it. And I was ready for a new style. After scouring the web for fabulous new do’s, I’d decided that I wanted to a major braid-out. It wasn’t until I got in front of the mirror that I realized this was going to take some work…and a few prayers to sweet baby Jesus.
My 4C hair is stubborn as a mule and as tightly coiled as a a size small mini-dress is on my size large hips. It takes major patience, and quite a few hours, to wash, condition and detangle the halo of curls I was blessed with. My hair, like most 4C naturals, shrinks about 90% after drying. I know some of you ladies feel me on that! Some days I strut around proudly rocking my hair – others I wish fervently that hats would still fit over my crown of tangled glory.
Suffice to say, my “major braid-out” turned into a baby fro. Lol. How I love my hair! I realized, over time, that it was totally okay to have days where I just didn’t like my hair. It happens! I just try my best to plow through them and style it something FIERCE the next day.
PATIENCE is key for me. After much growling and struggling, I feel a little better. Lol.
I know you’ve had them! SHARE! What are some of your natural hair frustrations?
