SPOTLIGHT: MEET THIS WEEKS CURLY DEVIANT!

What makes you a Curly Deviant?
I am a Curly Deviant because my personality shines through everything that I do from my hair down to my accessories! My personality is very bubbly. As a full figured woman, I exude confidence regardless of what im wearing or how my hair is.

How would you describe your style?
I tend to not follow fashion trends because most fashion is geared toward skinny women. As a full figured woman, I have to find items that accentuate my curves and highlight my best assets. I have a lot of random items in my closet that I can mismatch and place together to make the the perfect outfit. I have recently discovered that decorative scarves can really bring an outfit out. It is also a fun way to play with my locs and really open up my face. I love being creative with eye shadow and earrings!

How do you normally style your natural hair?
I have found that coloring my locs has really jazzed my hair up. I love the way they make my locs stand out. I love using bantu knots to achieve a curly set of hair and I love pinning them up in different ways. Bobby pins are a girl’s best friend. I look at my hair as another accessory to add to my overall style.

Do you have a daily regime? If so, what is it?
I try not to tamper with my hair so much when it comes to using products. I might spray some braid spray once every two days to help with the locing of my hair ; my locs are still young. I see my stylist once a month and she conditions it, trims and retwist it into cute styles.

What are your interests? Career?
I am currently in grad school obtaining my Masters of Arts in Teaching with a certification to teach Secondary English. I want to teach overseas for a couple of years and then return to the U.S to possibly obtain a Ph. D in Educational Leadership.

A Special Thank you to Alicia Smith Jr. for being Curly Deviant of the Week!

SPOTLIGHT: MEET THIS WEEKS CURLY DEVIANT!

What makes you a Curly Deviant?
I am NOT a fan of conformity! I truly believe I was made to STAND OUT!  I have my own style and ways of doing things. I think diversity is important because it allows us to see the world in a different way. Change is also necessary, so as for my hair, I love to rock it in various styles to showcase my personality. Most people remember me as the lady with many hairstyles.

How would you describe your style?
I would describe my style as simple chic. Whether I’m wearing shorts and a t-shirt or a professional get-up I always want to look put together. I don’t wear too much. I’ve always admired the people who can- but for me less is more.

How do you normally style your natural hair?
I opt for stretched and defined styles. I live for versatility so I change-up my styles often. I usually resort to twist outs, braid outs, high buns, and puffs. Depending on how the wind blows, I typically take my hair down and If I like the way it lays, I’ll wear it just like that. I love the options I have with my natural hair.

Do you have a daily regime? If so, what is it?
I use the same method whether I style my hair in the morning or at night. I moisturize with water or a product (Shea Moisture) and I seal my ends with a mix of shea butter and oils. At night I either twist or braid my hair and tie a satin scarf around it. If I’m maintaining a twist out or braid out, I use a scrunchie(s) to tie it up and then follow with a satin scarf. This keeps my hair moisturized and easy to maintain.

What are your interests? Career?
I’m currently a student at the University of Iowa, studying Business and Spanish.  I truly enjoy learning new things on all levels. I love music, writing, and painting. As far as career goals, I’m not certain where I would like to end up. I’m constantly evolving and I do not plan on limiting myself in regards to any career I venture into.
